Highway safety tips

1st May 2014

Did you know every year, more than 1000 workers and motorists die in highway work zone crashes? And more then 40,000 are injured? It's not only caltrans workers who risk their live along the freeway, but countless construction contractors' employees have been killed during the past several years. As the transportation system ages, the workload increases, exposing thousands of highway workers to more dangers. Often times these men and women have nothing more than a string of orange cones standing between them and speeding traffic. There is no room for error in a work zone. Here are some tips on how you can help and keep our workers safe on the roadway:

1. NEVER drive impaired and dedicate all your attention to the roadway.

2. Plan your trip. There are plenty of ways to get real time traffic update with planned lane closures.

3. Give yourself plenty of time. Nothing worst then being in a rush and not focusing on the road.

4. Merge into the proper lane.

5. Don't tailgate. Expect the unexpected.

6. Obey the posted speed limit.

7. Follow instructions from flaggers.

8. Slow down.

Remember at the end of the day the work that these workers are doing is to better everyone's experience traveling and commuting. Together we can all make a difference.
