SAFETY INDUSTRY - THE STRUGGLE

SAFETY INDUSTRY - THE STRUGGLE

Posted by Miles Horn on 14th Jan 2025

One of the hardest realities of selling safety supplies is that the certifications for shipping certain items can be outrageous.  For example; we do not ship erosion control products, fire extinguishers, or spray paint.  In fact anything with aerosols, even the air horn.  We have it in our brick and mortar store, and online for easy viewing.  Unfortunately, the erosion control is just to large to ship long distance.  The other items we just aren't certified to ship because of all the cost and hoops required.  This extremely limits sales.  One of the other struggles is making new information around the industry sound exciting.  Usually is OSHA changing things and putting in expensive new requirements, which isn't that exciting to hear that you're going to be slapped with new expenses in an already tough economy.  Even if it is an exciting new thing coming out, it means you'll have a learning curve, and people pride themselves in this industry on knowing just how to do something right.  They don't want a whole new way.  To boot, PG&E has stepped in and put a lot of requirements on products that make it expensive and tough on subcontractors.  The pre requirements to show up can be extensive, costly, and they don't provide a list of vendors who supply what they request.  Never the less, we are here for all safety supply needs and are happy to try our best to help you track down what is being required.  We're always open to hearing about new industry changes coming down the pipeline.
