Caltrans Opens Newcastle Road Overcrossing One Day Ahead of Schedule

14th Apr 2016

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting motorists that the Newcastle Road overcrossing in south Placer County opened to traffic at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, one day earlier than scheduled. The vertical lifting of the bridge structure was completed in one night on March 31 rather than the scheduled two nights, putting the project ahead of schedule. Motorists can now use the overcrossing to cross Interstate 80 in Newcastle.

The "Raise80" project is increasing the vertical clearance of nine freeway overcrossings on Interstate 80 in south Placer County. The Newcastle Road overcrossing in Newcastle is the seventh structure to be lifted. The final structure in the "Raise80" project is the Newcastle Union Pacific Railroad trestle which cannot be lifted to achieve the federally required vertical clearance of 16 feet, 6 inches. Instead, the Interstate will be excavated and lowered beginning May, 2016. Weather or other unexpected events may cause construction activities to be rescheduled.
